Why Do I Need a Concrete Washout?

The residual substances and pollutants generated during the cleaning of concrete trucks, pumps, mixers, chutes, hand tools, and wheelbarrows are collectively known as 'concrete washout.' Activities like saw cutting, coring, grinding, and grooving, as well as the use of products like grout, mortar, and stucco, can also contribute to the production of concrete washout. This waste exhibits highly alkaline properties, contains elevated levels of chromium, and possesses caustic and corrosive characteristics.

Improper management of concrete washout poses environmental risks, as it can contaminate both surface water and groundwater. This contamination occurs through alterations in pH, increased toxicity of other substances, and reduced water clarity. Each of these changes has adverse effects on wildlife and their respective habitats.

To mitigate these environmental concerns, having a proper concrete washout basin is essential for concrete work. Such basins effectively contain and manage the waste, preventing its indiscriminate disposal on the ground and reducing the environmental impact. Utilizing a concrete washout basin ensures responsible waste management, protects water quality, and contributes to the overall sustainability of concrete-related activities.

Additional things to keep in mind:

  • Have proper signage informing of the concrete washout area.

  • Keep all concrete washouts at least 50 feet from any storm drains, bodies of water, or ditches.

  • Daily inspection is required to ensure the basin is in proper condition.

  • Concrete Washouts must be cleaned or replaced if they reach 75% capacity.

  • Under no circumstances is the washout to overflow. If there is to be weather that could possibly cause this, coordinate to cover or replace before the weather event.
